Buffon: We’d give anything to win

Gianluigi Buffon has revealed his excitement that the European Championships are due to kick off today, and admits to a bit of nervous apprehension.

Italy kick off their Group C campaign against Spain on Sunday afternoon in Gdansk, but the competition begins on Friday in Warsaw as co-hosts Poland play Greece.

“Today finally begins the European Championships,” the shot-stopper posted on his Facebook page. “The waiting and frustration of the competition in sight will be over.

“I have a little fear and curiosity as to our game, quite justifiably, it is as if, after two years of work, we are under examination…and each examination will bring respective difficulties and adversities.

“What counts is our studies, but the most important aspect is to keep our emotions at bay and have an unbeatable physical and mental condition.”

Buffon relayed his ambition to do well and also had a message for fans, in light of the betting scandal to have hit Serie A and the links that it has had with the national team’s training camp.

“We want, hope and believe…we would exchange two or three years of our life to return to the place we all dream of…where we would like to get to, to rediscover an Italian party, rediscover the nation’s pride, it would be the best gift to end this season.

“Your support and your love will be critical and would be the strongest signal against those who want to create fractures between us and you.”
