Prandelli: 'Wasted opportunities'

Cesare Prandelli admits Italy wasted too many scoring opportunities against Croatia, but “we can still believe in qualification, absolutely.”

The Azzurri had once again taken the lead through Andrea Pirlo’s free kick only to be pegged back in another 1-1 draw.

“It was a great chance, we were in front and ran few risks before that cross. But the team is alive and kicking, so we’ll fight to the end,” Prandelli told Rai Sport after the final whistle.

“We had good opportunities in the first half and certainly could’ve done better. We knew they’d attack and throw balls forward in the second half, though we didn’t risk that much anyway.

“We need more determination, but also more energy.”

Italy now have just two points from as many games, while Croatia are on four. This evening Spain face the Republic of Ireland.

“Of course we can still believe in qualification, absolutely.”

The result means that if Spain beat Ireland this evening, then both Spain and Croatia could go through with a 2-2 draw in their final encounter. It is an identical situation to the one that saw Italy knocked out in Euro 2004.
