Cesare Prandelli’s men have an eight-point lead at the top of Group C with three games to go, so only third-placed Serbia could theoretically catch them now.

Italy will book their ticket for Euro 2012 on Tuesday with a win over Slovenia or if Serbia do not beat the Faroe Islands.

Even if the Azzurri draw at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence next week, it will still take a remarkable upset for them to fumble qualification now.

Italy’s remaining games are at home to Slovenia and Northern Ireland with a trip to Serbia on October 7.
