The Azzurri squeezed through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 after beating the Republic of Ireland 2-0, but also needed Spain’s 1-0 win over Croatia.

“I am Italian and therefore happy Italy went through,” confessed Tardelli on Rai Sport.

“It’s also disappointing, as we played well and conceded two goals from set pieces. It shouldn’t happen, but it did a few too many times in this tournament.

“I believe Ireland shook off a psychological block today as well, as we played a great game.

“Italy have everything it takes to reach the Final, as they have players of quality, talent and grit with an excellent Coach.”
