Italy are in a position to become European Champions for the second time in their history, says Marcello Lippi.
The Azzurri will face England in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 on Sunday after coming through Group C with Spain.
Although they drew their first two encounters, goals from Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli ensured a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Monday.
“Now any target is possible,” the 2006 World Cup winning tactician stated. “The goals of Cassano and Balotelli were important as they unblocked us.”
Although the China-based tactician believes that Italy can challenge for glory, he’s been impressed and surprised by some other nations.
“Germany, in my opinion, are the strongest team,” the former Juventus and Inter Coach continued to the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Portugal, meanwhile, could become the revelation, but I have also liked watching Spain very much.
“I was left somewhat shocked though by Russia’s elimination.”
The latter, who beat Italy 3-0 in a pre-tournament friendly, failed to progress from Group A at the expense of Greece and the Czech Republic.
