Lazio made an attempt to re-sign centre-back Alessandro Nesta from Milan a year ago, revealed sporting director Igli Tare today.
Nesta is out of contract this summer and, having confirmed his departure from Milan, is currently reported to be in negotiations with Canadian outfit Montreal Impact over a possible switch to the MLS.
Due to the Rossoneri’s penchant for negotiating one-year rolling contracts with their more senior stars, Nesta was also free to talk to clubs last summer and, according to Tare, he did speak to Lazio, albeit briefly.
“Last year we tried to convince Alessandro Nesta to return to Lazio, but for family reasons he chose not to accept, because he wanted to continue living in Milan,” Tare admitted to reporters today.
“I have heard that Lazio rejected the possibility of ever taking back Nesta, but this is not true.
“All people who are a part of Lazio’s history are always welcome. Unfortunately, there wasn’t the possibility and we had to accept the situation as it was.”
Nesta came through the youth ranks at the capital club, before spending nine years in the first team.
Tare also responded to questions on the latest with Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz, who has been involved in on-off links to the Aquile this summer.
“Certainly, Lazio have done everything possible, we have spoken with the player and his club. Now, let’s see if we can finalise the deal or not.
“It takes time, even if the Press always has a need for news. None of the names matched to us in midfield are true reports.”
