Mauro Zarate’s return to Lazio has gotten off on the wrong foot, as he missed the first day of pre-season work after missing his flight home.

The striker, who has declared that this coming season needs to be his ‘best ever’, was expected to report to Vladimir Petkovic’s first day of work with the players this Friday.

However, after missing a flight out of Argentina, the 25-year-old was the only absentee without permission.

Miroslav Klose, Sergio Floccari, Giuseppe Sculli, Matuzalem, Alvaro Gonzalez and Juan Pablo Carrizo were the other players who missed today’s check-in at Formello, for various and previously known reasons.

Zarate’s agent clarified the situation and confirmed that the forward, who struggled whilst out on loan last term with Inter, will be joining the squad at the next available moment.

“Sometimes in Argentina the streets are blocked, so you can fail to arrive at the airport,” Luis Ruzzi told La Repubblica.

“However, by this evening or at latest by tomorrow morning he will be in Italy. At 10am he will be there for the medical assessment.”

Aquile players are undergoing preparatory work for three days before travelling out to Auronzo di Cadore on Monday with new Coach Petkovic to begin their pre-season training retreat.
