Spartak Moscow Coach Unai Emery has denied reports they’ve made a bid for Juventus outcast Felipe Melo. “We cannot afford him.”

The Brazilian midfielder spent last season on loan at Galatasaray and was hoping to make that situation permanent, but this week Juve rejected the €6.5m offer.

There were instead reports that Spartak Moscow had stepped in with a higher bid, but that was ruled out.

“It is a lie,” Spartak Moscow manager Emery told Tuttojuve.

“I absolutely deny the story of Spartak Moscow showing an interest in Felipe Melo. We absolutely cannot afford to give him the wages he is accustomed to.

“I know him and can say he is a good player, but Spartak cannot afford him and that is the end of the matter. It’s like asking if we wanted to sign Leo Messi.”

This is not the first time Spartak Moscow have appeared on the Italian transfer scene, as they were in failed negotiations with Cagliari” data-scaytid=”54″>Cagliari for Davide Astori.

“It’s a real shame, as he is a great defender. Unfortunately it all collapsed at the last minute because he didn’t want to come to Russia.”
