Michel Morganella has been sent home from the London 2012 Olympics early for an alleged racist message sent on social networking website Twitter.
The Palermo midfielder, who was representing his country Switzerland during the Games this month, is claimed to have sent, but later deleted, a racist ‘tweet’ on the public website in reference to opponents South Korea. Pictures of the tweet appeared in the Swiss media today.
As a result of an investigation, the team have confirmed this evening the decision to expel the 23-year-old from the tournament with immediate effect.
“He discriminated, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team and the South Korean people,” team chief Gian Gilli told reporters this evening.
Switzerland were beaten 2-1 by the Koreans on Sunday and must beat Mexico in their final group game on Wednesday to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Morganella, who has spent the past two seasons at Novara, only made his senior debut for his country two months ago.
