Milan are still a side to be respected despite their summer revolution, says former Rossonero Alexander Merkel.

The Diavolo have gone through some mass changes after a host of veteran players left at the end of their contracts, while they then decided to sell Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Paris Saint-Germain.

“The side has been weakened when you consider that they have lost two fundamental elements in Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” the German told Sky Sport Italia.

“However, they still remain a great club and they’ll still be able to do well despite the absence of those two champions.”

Merkel, 22, grew up in the Milan youth ranks but is now a Genoa player after spending the last six months at San Siro.

“I would have liked to stay at Milan, but I’m now at Genoa and I’m just thinking about giving my all to this shirt.”
