Prandelli welcomes longer bench

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has called a new rule permitting 12 man benches in Serie A 'a major turning point'.

The 54-year-old was fulsome in his praise of the new legislation, which allows the whole first team squad to take part during match days.

“This is great news,” Prandelli told Corriere dello Sport. “It marks a major turning point in Italian football and for all the championships that will adopt the new rule.

“Sending a player to the stands is one of the most difficult things for a Coach and it's humiliating for the players involved. With all players now on the bench, it's definitely an advantage – they will certainly feel more involved.”

“For years Coaches have been talking about this issue,” the former Fiorentina tactician revealed.

“And last year in Spain during a meeting of the national associations, this was one of the main talking points. I hope the rule is extended to national team qualifiers and for the next World Cup.

“On a technical level, it's not that different than before. You can still only make three substitutions.”
