Officials from the Australian club have now touched down in Italy for face-to-face discussions with the No 10’s agent.

“Sydney remain a possibility,” Stefano Del Piero, Alex’s brother, stated. “There are a few issues that we still need to elaborate on and we’ll continue talking.”

Sydney suggested that a deal for the calcio icon had been wrapped up last week, but the 37-year-old has since put on the brakes.

The forward, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, is available on a free transfer after ending his 19-year career at Juventus in the summer.

Sydney FC official Tony Pignata will remain in Italy and a new round of talks could take place as soon as this evening.

Celtic, Southampton, Sporting Braga and Sion have also been linked with the forward.
