President Claudio Lotito has given his backing to new Coach Vladimir Petkovic following Lazio’s fast start to the Serie A season.
A narrow victory over Atalanta on the opening day was followed by a 3-0 thrashing of Palermo on Sunday that leaves the Biancocelesti joined top with Juventus and Napoli on six points.
“We will have to see if Lazio will be contenders this season, we certainly showed a good quality of play, strong will and unity. Thanks also goes to Petkovic. He has clear ideas. He is a person of high morals, speaks seven languages, and has a strong character,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
Turning talk to the now closed transfer market Lotito blasted French defender Modibo Diakite, who is yet to sign a new contract. “He has made an absurd choice - he was chosen by me, he didn't exist on the football landscape before. He was playing in the Primavera where no Coaches saw him, and I was the first one to notice him.
“When he was injured I renewed his contract. Then he refuses to re-sign three times and with his best known teammates not agreeing with his choice, and he even wants more, asking for €1.2m. If Lazio finds that certain situations are true, we will act accordingly.”
