Lazio striker Mauro Zarate turned down the chance to join Turkish club Besiktas in the summer, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The Black Eagles offered a reported €1m for the forward, an amount which the Biancocelesti accepted. The loan move fell through however, when the Argentine failed to agree personal terms with Samet Aybaba's side.

The former Velez Sarsfield man has endured a mixed time at the Stadio Olimpico since joining the club in 2009. Having initially endeared himself to the Lazio faithful, his form dipped, and last season was sent out on loan to Inter.

Zarate has so far played only two games under new boss Vladimir Petkovic, both in the Europa League.
