After years of generally ignoring youngsters, outfits on the peninsula are giving them a chance in these tough economical times.

“The re-discovery of youth systems is the best thing about the game right now,” the 2006 World Cup winning boss told QS.

“Youngsters now have more ‘weight’ than foreign players. This is the best way to take Italian football to an even higher level.”

Milan are one of the clubs who have sacrificed big name players to give the likes of Mattia De Sciglio and Stephan El Shaarawy a chance.

“Are the two Milan clubs in decline? I’d say they are more in a stage of reconstruction. They are doing so in order to get back to their splendid past.”

Lippi was also questioned on this season’s Champions League. “Barcelona and Real Madrid are leading the way, then there is Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus.”
