Marco Materazzi has claimed that Roma will rue the decision they made last summer not to hire then caretaker boss Vincenzo Montella.

The Giallorossi appointed their former striker on an interim basis in February 2011 following the departure of Claudio Ranieri, before deciding on Luis Enrique the following May.

Montella went on to coach Catania, and then moved on to Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”9″>Fiorentina this summer, where his side have made a promising start to the campaign.

And Materazzi believes that the capital club have come to regret that decision now under the tutelage of current boss Zdenek Zeman.

“There is enthusiasm for the beautiful game that Zeman plays,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “But I think Roma regret not taking Montella.

“Fiorentina are doing great things with him, despite not having an out-and-out goalscorer like Pablo Osvaldo.

“With an attacker like him in their side, I think Fiorentina could have had four or five points more and could challenge near the top of the League.”

The Viola currently sit in fifth position having won four of their first nine Serie A games.
