Francesco Guidolin defends Udinese’s drop to bottom of the European group. “We’re in good company with Zenit and Manchester City.”

The Friulani surprisingly lost 3-2 at home to Young Boys, ending a seven-match unbeaten continental streak at the Stadio Friuli.

“We’re bottom of the table? We’re in good company,” shrugged the Coach. “It seems that clubs who can spend €40m like Luciano Spalletti’s Zenit or Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City aren’t exactly doing better.

“As for tonight, I can say we did not deserve to lose and we gave our all, but were unable to get a result. The difference was in their fitness levels.

“Young Boys have played once in 15 days, while we had three games during the same period, but despite that we gave everything we had and created numerous scoring opportunities.”

Udinese also lost 3-1 in Switzerland and are now bottom of their Europa League group. Click here for the results, fixtures and standings.

“I am proud to be the Coach of this team, both for the results we achieved in recent years and for other reasons.

“We are not mathematically out of the running for qualification yet and we must continue to believe. Unfortunately it hasn’t gone well.

“At least the victory away to Liverpool will forever remain in the history of this club. Now we must look ahead to the next game against Chievo.”

Guidolin also revealed a regret for the Europa League, which they entered after elimination in the Champions League play-offs.

“Allan was not on the UEFA list because when he arrived we didn’t know his characteristics. If we carry on in the competition, he will certainly be included.”
