Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini confirmed a three-month lay-off awaits as tests showed “a lesion to the calf muscle.”
The World Cup winner had hoped the tests would show only a strain, but this afternoon he posted a message on Twitter.
“Unfortunately, a lesion to the calf muscle has been confirmed. I’ll have to be out for a while... But I’ll do everything I can to return as soon as possible and stronger than ever!
“I thank you for the many get well soon messages I received over the last few hours. A hug to all of you!”
Juve will likely now go back on to the market in January for a replacement, especially as Lucio was released from his contract to join Sao Paulo this week.
