Boateng threatens to quit Serie A

Kevin-Prince Boateng is so shaken by the racist insults he received during a friendly that he confessed “I’ll meet my agent next week and see if there’s still a point to playing in Italy.”

The Milan midfielder earned praise from around Italy and the world when walking off during a friendly game with lower league side Pro Patria. See below for video. Several ‘fans’ were arrested and today another five have been charged with hurling racist insults.

“This isn’t something you can just shake off,” Boateng told German newspaper Bild.

“I’ll sleep on it for the next three nights. I’ll meet my agent Roger Wittmann next week and see if there’s still a point to playing in Italy.”

The Ghanaian who was born and raised in Germany confirmed he was “proud” of his teammates for walking off the pitch with him.

The game in Busto Arsizio, an industrial town between Varese and Milan, lasted only 26 minutes. The referee had already stopped play twice due to racist insults from a small group of supporters and the Pro Patria players had pleaded for them to stop.

“I heard the first monkey noises after five minutes,” continued Boateng. “At first I didn’t think anything of it, then it happened again and I told the referee if this continued I would leave the field.

“He tried to calm me down, but when the chants resumed I thought enough is enough, I can’t continue playing like this.

“It is easy to turn a blind eye and much harder to take action, but I would’ve done the same thing even if it was a Champions League game against Real Madrid. I’d do it all again, always.

“I was angry, sad, shocked and it’s a disgrace this sort of thing still happens in 2013. It’s not just about Italy, but the whole world. I wanted to send a strong signal because this sort of thing cannot exist. We’ve got to open our eyes.

“Racism has no place in football.”
