Fabio Cannavaro believes a lack of quality has given birth to the craze of three-man defences in Serie A.
The former centre-back, a Golden Ball winner in 2006 following World Cup success with Italy, was asked for his opinion on the new tactical trend which is sweeping through Italian football.
“The three-man defence has become fashionable because there are now fewer good defenders in one-on-one situations,” the ex-Juventus, Parma, Inter, Napoli and Real Madrid man told Sky Sport Italia.
“As a result, Coaches are looking to beef up that department.
“We, as a nation, must return to our origins because we have always been good at defending and we shouldn’t be ashamed of that.”
Napoli, Juventus, Inter and Fiorentina are just some of the clubs in Serie A who are using three-man rearguards.
