Sampdoria stopper Daniele Gastaldello insists he never gave up hope of returning to the Italian international squad.

The Doria man has been included in the latest Azzurri party for Wednesday’s friendly against Holland.

“Getting back into the squad is something that I’m honoured by,” the 29-year-old commented.

“I have to be happy with this call. It’s a consequence of the fact that I never gave up and is reward for the hard work of the last two years.”

Gastaldello, one goal in 20 League games so far this season, was given his one and only cap by Cesare Prandelli in the March 2011 2-0 win in Ukraine.
