Lazio dominated Borussia Monchengladbach with a comfortable 2-0 win and go through to face Stuttgart in the Europa League Round of 16.

The Biancocelesti fought back for a 3-3 thriller in Germany last week, but Andre Dias was suspended after his red card for giving away two penalties. Lorik Cana was centre-back as they shelved the three-man defence experiment that failed so miserably in a 3-0 defeat to Siena on Monday night.

Lazio were literally gifted an opening goal after just 10 minutes. Alvaro Dominguez was caught in possession in the final third with a disastrous first touch, allowing Antonio Candreva to pounce and easily fire past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

A Senad Lulic pile-driver from distance was palmed round the post at full stretch, while Patrick Herrmann’s effort was well wide. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen nearly gave away a second goal with a dire clearance under pressure from Senad Lulic.

It was 2-0 when Ter Stegen was again shaky, as this time he only beat away a fierce Stefan Radu angled drive into the path of Alvaro Gonzalez to slide under the net from six yards.

Before the break, Ter Stegen got down to flap a Hernanes angled drive out for a corner. Amin Younes came off the bench and threatened for Gladbach with a mazy run that ended on the side-netting.

A Candreva blockbuster from distance whistled wide and Martin Stranzl’s daisy-cutter was well smothered. It was Federico Marchetti’s first genuine save and came after 67 minutes of football.

The Germans thought they had a step back into the game when Younes burst into the penalty area and fell as Marchetti went to ground, but the referee was absolutely correct to book him for simulation. Replays show the 19-year-old clearly dived without contact.

Marchetti really did need a great fingertip save when Luuk De Jong surged past Giuseppe Biava and fired off an angled drive, but the goalkeeper was at full stretch to get something on it, then Lulic stopped Herrmann getting on the follow-up.
