Genoa-Milan 'a festival of sport'

Genoa-Milan has been confirmed for a Friday evening kick-off with no extra security laid on despite the tragic history between these clubs.

There were fears ahead of this Friday’s game at Marassi and a meeting was held between local police, football authorities and security chiefs to decide on a strategy.

It has been decided to keep the 19.45 GMT kick-off and no particular extra security procedures required, so fans from both sides can come to the stadium.

“We want it to be a festival of sport,” said Mayor of Genoa Marco Doria.

There has always been a tense rapport between the sets of ultras, but it escalated in January 1995 when Genoa fan Vincenzo Claudio Spagnolo was stabbed to death outside the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Visiting supporters were only allowed to attend their games again in 2010 and last season there were running battles between Genoa fans and police when they tried to attack the Milan supporters outside the stadium.
