The centre-back broke his nose during the 1-0 home defeat to Bologna on Sunday evening, colliding with goalkeeper Gianluca Curci.

The official Inter website confirmed he went under the knife on Monday to reduce the fracture.

However, it is believed Ranocchia will still be able to play in Thursday’s Europa League tie with the aid of a protective mask.

The Nerazzurri have to fight back from a 3-0 first leg defeat to Spurs, kicking off at San Siro at 18.00 GMT.

Inter’s injury list for this game already includes Diego Milito, Walter Samuel, Yuto Nagatomo, Matias Silvestre, Ricky Alvarez, Gaby Mudingayi and Joel Obi.

Tommaso Rocchi, Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Ezequiel Schelotto are all cup-tied.
