The 39-year-old pulled up after a seemingly innocuous challenge from Salvatore Aronica in the first half of today’s game at the Stadio Barbera.

He was stretchered off in evident pain and initial reports suggest he may have damaged his Achilles tendon.

If confirmed, this could require up to eight months on the sidelines and perhaps even end his career, as Zanetti turns 40 in August.

Mediaset Premium claim chief Inter medic Professor Franco Combi confirmed the Achilles tendon problem.
