AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina has been found dead in his apartment just a few months after playing against Napoli in the Europa League.

“It is with great sorrow and shock that we can confirm that goalkeeper Ivan Turina passed away on the night between Wednesday and Thursday,” read an AIK Stockholm statement.

“Ivan died suddenly in his sleep and at the moment no crime is suspected.”

The 32-year-old Croatian had been at AIK since 2010 and alerted the club to a congenital heart problem when he first arrived, but passed all required fitness tests.

Turina was a familiar face to Serie A because AIK played against Napoli in the Europa League group phase this season.

He featured in both the 4-0 defeat at the San Paolo on September 20 and the 2-1 home loss on November 22.

Turina was the father of one-year-old twins and his wife is pregnant with their third child.

His most recent match was on April 7, a 0-0 draw with Syrianska.

This is another tragic loss for the football world a year on from Piermario Morosini’s death during a Pescara-Livorno Serie B match. An autopsy showed he had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.
