The Italian tweeted: “What a career! Proud and honoured to have been coached by Sir Alex Ferguson. #thankyougaffer"

The 26-year-old was snapped up by Ferguson as a 17-year-old after a spell in the Parma youth system.

After loan spells at Newcastle and Parma, Rossi was sold to Villarreal in July 2007 for around €10m.

He scored four goals in 14 games for United.
