Guidolin almost quit Udineseā€¦

Francesco Guidolin has revealed that he almost handed in his resignation as Udinese boss last August.

“After the Champions League play-off defeat to Sporting Braga, I came very close to quitting,” the tactician told the Gazzetta dello Sport, referring to a tie they lost on penalties.

“But I stayed tough and it all passed two days later. I fell back in love with this city - I love the people here.

“I will only Coach this club in Italy, while I’ll keep a small door open for a European side.”

The 57-year-old, hired by the outfit for the second time in 2010, has now led Udinese into Europe for the last three seasons.

That achievement has seen him attract the attention of some of the giants of Serie A.

“The big clubs have come in for me,” he added. “But I don’t want to hear claims that I can’t cope with the pressure.

“I have been coaching and dealing with pressure for years.

“The simple truth is that I don’t have the need to be on the big stage, you can be content too at a place like Udine.

“I’m proud to be here and I had an objective – to collect 180 points over the last three seasons. We’ve gained more than that.”
