Luca Antonelli has avoided a fracture, but heavily sprained and bruised his ankle, putting the Confederations Cup at risk.
The Genoa full-back had been impressive in the first half of last night’s 4-0 friendly win over San Marino, but limped off before the break.
There were initial reports he had sustained a fracture of the shin, but x-rays at a local Bologna hospital gave the all-clear.
Italy medical staff will continue to evaluate his condition on Monday, as there is a sprain to the ankle with heavy bruising.
The Azzurri must give their final 23-man squad for the Confederations Cup on Monday and Antonelli could well miss out due to this injury.
