The Milan forward was expected to start against Mexico in the Confederations Cup opener on Sunday evening.

He interrupted the Friday training session in Rio de Janeiro with a right thigh problem and went straight into the locker room with the medical staff.

“We are optimistic on his recovery, but we’ll have to evaluate his condition tomorrow,” said Professor Enrico Castellacci.

Balotelli also skipped the game between ranks, but there was good news for Stephan El Shaarawy, who was back in full training after he missed Thursday’s session with a muscular problem.
