Controversial ref for Italy-Mexico

Controversial Chilean referee Enrique Osses has been assigned to Italy’s opening Confederations Cup match with Mexico.

The game kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Osses is a controversial figure and the 39-year-old has often hit the headlines for his propensity to flash red cards.

In 2005 he famously sent off 21 players in 16 League games, getting punched in the face by Union Espanola goalkeeper Ignacio Gonzalez after a dismissal.

In 2008 he sent off three Universidad Catolica players during a Santiago derby with Colo Colo.

In February this year Osses booked Nacional defender Alejandro Lembo twice during a Copa Libertadores match, but only actually sent him off five minutes later under pressure from Ecuadorean side Barcelona.

Back in March Costa Rica lodged an official protest after their 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to the United States went ahead in heavy snow.

This season alone, Osses officiated 15 games between the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Primera Division Transicion, flashing 89 yellow cards and 12 reds while awarding six penalties.

His assistants at the Maracanà will be Carlos Astroza and Sergio Roman, also from Chile.
