Italy begin their Confederations Cup tonight against Mexico and veteran Gerardo Torrado warns El Tri have “got rid of that inferiority complex.”

They are in Group A along with Brazil, who beat Japan 3-0 last night, and go head-to-head at the Maracanà this evening at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“We’ve got rid of that inferiority complex we once had,” the midfielder told FIFA.com.

“These days Mexican players know they can compete and they’ve got the belief and the technique to succeed.”

El Tri beat Italy in their last meeting, a 2-1 friendly in Brussels in 2010, but that remains the only victory along with four 1-1 draws and six defeats.

“It won’t be easy, but then the Confederations Cup never is. You’re up against the best teams in the world and the competition is very stiff.

“At the same time, I think we’ll have some good games. I think Mexico will perform well and we’ll be looking to go as far as possible.”
