The defender scored in the Confederations Cup tie, but could not prevent this loss, which was without Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi.

Riccardo Montolivo and Ignazio Abate also went off injured in the opening half-hour, then Christian Maggio hit the crossbar.

“There were factors that could’ve changed the game, but three days from the Japan match we saw the real Italy,” assured Chiellini on Sky Sport Italia.

“We can lose, but put Brazil under serious pressure and with a bit of luck could even have won.

“We needed this performance, as there were many young players and playing Brazil on their own turf is valuable experience.

“I think that this Italy can face off against all the best sides in the world.”

The Azzurri are through to the semi-final, most likely against Spain, after conceding eight goals in three matches.

“Admittedly we’ve conceded too many goals, especially on set plays, so we have got to be more concentrated as these incidents can change a match.”
