Mattia De Sciglio was happy that his saved penalty didn’t stop Italy taking bronze in the Confederations Cup.
The 20-year-old saw his effort parried by Fernando Muslera during the shoot-out after a 2-2 draw with Uruguay.
“Fortunately the penalty didn’t have an effect on the result. I didn’t watch the goalkeeper and he did well to guess the right angle. Luckily Gigi Buffon performed three great saves,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“These are competitions that leave something in you, as you can challenge different football cultures and experience emotions in a splendid squad. I think all our efforts were repaid with this medal.”
Milan defender De Sciglio was asked whether teammate Stephan El Shaarawy would remain at the club.
“I’d be happy if El Shaarawy stayed at Milan and he played a great season, so it’s normal to have a dip in fitness levels after that.
“He just needs to relax, enjoy this third place and realise he’s done very well. Of course, it’s up to the club in the end.”
