Brazil crush Spain for Cup

Brazil are the Confederations Cup winners after thumping Spain 3-0 in an emphatic performance at the Maracanà.

The Seleçao won their home tournament – a warm-up for next year’s World Cup – in Rio de Janeiro by crushing the reigning World and European champions.

Fred opened the scoring after just 90 seconds, then Neymar made it 2-0 with a fierce strike under the bar.

Straight after the restart Fred was on target again, curling past Iker Casillas.

Sergio Ramos had the opportunity to get Spain back into it on 55 minutes when Marcelo tripped Jesus Navas, but hit his penalty against the base of the upright.

La Roja imploded completely as Gerard Pique was shown a straight red card for taking down his new Barcelona teammate Neymar on the edge of the box.

Julio Cesar ensured there was no consolation goal with a spectacular flying save on David Villa, while David Luiz performed a remarkable goalline clearance on Pedro in the first half.

Italy took third place by beating Uruguay on penalties in Salvador de Bahia following a 2-2 draw.
