The Azzurri turned to the Spaniard after previous boss Walter Mazzarri left at the end of his contract to join Inter.
Although Benitez’s previous spell in Serie A lasted less than six months at Inter in 2010, Mazzola has faith in his skills.
“I think we’ll see a great Napoli,” Italian legend Mazzola told Radio Kiss Kiss. “I like the Spaniard a lot. He’s got a strong character and makes himself understood to his players.
“I immediately thought that he would be a good choice for a Napoli side who now need to take a step up in quality.
“Juventus, having won the Scudetto, will be favourites, but Napoli will be right behind them followed by Milan, Fiorentina and Inter.”
