Catania have slammed the door on potential buyers for Gonzalo Bergessio and presented new buy Panagiotis Tachtsidis.

Striker Bergessio had been linked with several top clubs, but President Antonino Pulvirenti insists he’s staying in Sicily.

“The deadline for us to evaluate offers for our players was this weekend. The transfer market is now closed when it comes to our most important players.

“We need to set out plans and that is not simple. We also do not have the money to stage a big swoop in the final days of the transfer session.”

Maxi Lopez was all set to join Al Nasr, but his move to the Dubai-based club collapsed.

“I am glad Maxi Lopez stayed here. We’ll discuss matters with him, including his family issues.”

Pulvirenti was speaking at the presentation of new Catania signing Tachtsidis, who arrived in a co-ownership deal from Genoa.

“Tachtsidis replaces Francesco Lodi in our midfield. I don’t think there will be any other incoming players, as we have already improved the squad in terms of quality and average age.”

Tachtsidis spent last season on loan at Roma, where he split the fans after taking the place of Daniele De Rossi in Zdenek Zeman’s line-up.

“I don’t like being compared to De Rossi or Lodi,” said the Greek midfielder. “I never had doubts about coming to Catania, as I am very happy to be here.”
