Walter Mazzarri says his Inter side are 40 per cent away from their peak with the Serie A season on the horizon.
The tactician made his official debut on the Nerazzurri bench yesterday during his side’s 4-0 Coppa Italia destruction of Cittadella.
“Today we saw 60 per cent of how we can perform, although in the end we created a lot and remained focused,” the former Napoli boss told Inter Channel.
“In these games in August you can’t take anything for granted and yesterday you saw four out of five Serie A teams get knocked out of the Cup.
“Looking at the result now it all seems easy, but that’s not the way it went. Cittadella were well organised and closed down space. When the time is right I want to see faster play from us.”
Inter’s pre-season form so far had seen doubts develop about their play at the back after the introduction of Mazzarri’s three-man defence.
“I was looking for us to keep a clean sheet and show improvement when defending,” the tactician continued.
“We played as a team too, almost never resorting to individual play. This is a young team with room for improvement. We need to grow individually and collectively.
“We’re on the right path but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us…”
