The Lega Serie B has expanded the play-off places for this season up to eighth place, as long as they are within 14 points of third.

This evening the clubs voted unanimously to introduce the new regulations from the 2013-14 campaign, which kicks off tomorrow.

As usual, the top two teams will automatically be promoted into Serie A.

There will be no need for play-offs if the team in third place has more than a nine-point advantage over fourth.

Otherwise, the ‘play-off perimeter’ will encompass up to six teams as long as they are within 14 points of third place.

This is an expansion from the previous regulations, which had only four teams entering the play-offs.

The first play-off round will be a one-off game format between fifth and eighth, sixth and seventh.

The semi-finals will then be home and away legs with third and fourth entering the fray.

Promotion will ultimately be decided by a home and away leg Final.

As for relegation, the teams in 20th, 21st and 22nd place go down automatically.

The 19th-placed side are also relegated if there is a gap bigger than four points with the team in 18th.

If not, then a play-out will take place with home and away legs.

Despite the fact these promotion and relegation ties have two legs, away goals do not count. They are treated as mini-tournaments and the side with the most points (three for a win, one for a draw) goes through.

There is no extra time or penalties. If level, qualification is decided by their position in the Serie B table.
