Francesco Guidolin insists Udinese “mustn’t talk about bad luck” because their 3-1 home defeat to Slovan Liberec “was our fault.”

The Friulani look set to lose a European play-off for the third year running, as after crashing out of the Champions League twice, they are hanging by a thread to get into the Europa League.

“We could’ve been happy with 1-1,” said Guidolin. “I told my team that at half-time. The second goal on the counter-attack was one we should not have conceded. It’s our fault, so we mustn’t talk about bad luck.

“On August 29 we have to achieve something extraordinary, making zero mistakes and creating many scoring opportunities.

“Hopefully we might also have that little bit of luck that we were missing today. It will take a super performance.”

Udinese were undoubtedly unfortunate, as they hit the woodwork three times and had 27 attempts on goal compared to Slovan Liberec’s seven.

“If we played this game again, it would rarely end this way. We wanted to win, even with the most slender lead, and therefore force Slovan to open up so we could use our qualities against them.”

Meanwhile, captain Antonio Di Natale needed 10 stitches to a cut on his head, having played most of the second half with a large bandage to stem the bleeding.
