Sunderland are reportedly in talks with Napoli for Andrea Dossena after he failed a Torino medical.
The wing-back had been due to join Torino on Friday, but the move collapsed at the last minute when doctors found a lesion in his thigh.
This sort of injury requires only two or three weeks to heal, but it was enough for Toro to look elsewhere, signing Giovanni Pasquale on loan from Udinese instead.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Sunderland are now in negotiations with Napoli for Dossena’s loan spell.
It would be a return to the Premier League for 31-year-old Dossena, who managed two goals in 31 games for Liverpool from July 2008 to January 2010.
Sky Sport Italia also suggest Sunderland are in advanced negotiations with Liverpool to take Under-21 international striker Fabio Borini on loan.
