Deadline deals: No striker switch

The transfer deadline has passed in Italy, so Fabio Quagliarella, Alberto Gilardino and Marco Borriello stay put.

The Italian market came to a close at 22.00 UK time (23.00 local, 21.00 GMT), although clubs can still sell outside of Serie A.

Some last-gasp deals went through, including Genoa signing Lazio goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri on a two-year contract and Napoli loaning Marco Donadel to Hellas Verona.

However, the so-called striker merry-go-round broke down completely, reportedly due to Juventus Coach Antonio Conte refusing to release Quagliarella.

Other rumours suggested Genoa and Roma tried to enact a straight swap, but Gilardino was unconvinced by the move to the Giallorossi.

Whatever the reasoning behind it, the fact remains Quagliarella will stay at Juve, Gilardino at Genoa and Borriello with Roma.

It is also highly unlikely that Quagliarella or Borriello will be sold abroad, as Juventus and Roma cannot now bring in replacements.
