Keisuke Honda has frightened Milan by noting they are “an option, but not the only option” for when he quits CSKA Moscow in January.

The Japanese international spoke to the media after scoring a goal in his country’s friendly against Ghana.

“Milan? They are an option, but not the only option. When the time comes, I will make a decision,” he stated.

His contract with CSKA Moscow expires on December 31, so he will be able to join any club as a free agent.

“I have now decided I will leave my club at the natural expiry of the contract.”

This is a surprise, as he had pushed all summer to join Milan, but CSKA repeatedly turned down their offers to buy him six months early.

It had been assumed Honda would therefore sign for the Rossoneri in January, but his statement suggests that is not necessarily true.

Everton were among the clubs who had also shown an interest in the creative midfielder over the summer.
