He was in charge of the Giallorossi from 2005 to 2009, but since his departure there have been a series of tacticians with limited success.

“Nobody knows Roma in Europe now,” declared Spalletti. “They used to say I was the one holding back their growth.

“After four years I have been to other European cities and no longer heard anything about Roma. This disappoints me a great deal.

“I had in a way hoped the snipers were right when they thought I was the one limiting the growth of the team, but it seems they got the wrong target.

“In St Petersburg I feel respected by an entire city, both as a sportsman and as a man. They helped me to work in the best possible circumstances, even during difficult moments, as the city, the fans and the club supported me.

“This is fundamental for me. I might be wrong, but I do everything with sentiment.”

Spalletti’s success at Zenit has made him one of the candidates to replace Cesare Prandelli on the Italy bench after the World Cup.
