The Azzurri joined Holland in becoming the first European teams to qualify for the 2014 World Cup this week.
Recent results have seen Cesare Prandelli’s men climb two places to reach fourth in the September FIFA World Ranking.
Spain remain top, while Argentina leapfrogged Germany into second spot.
The top 10 is completed by Colombia, Belgium, Uruguay, Brazil, Holland and Croatia.
England dropped three places to 17, while Alberto Zaccheroni’s Japan are at 42 and Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland plummeted to 59.
