Handanovic: Inter needed fresh start

Finishing ninth in Serie A last season was the setback Inter needed to start a new chapter, says goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

The Nerazzurri subsequently made changes to their squad and coaching staff after Walter Mazzarri came in for the axed Andrea Stramaccioni.

“To be honest I think a year like this was needed,” the man who is in his second season at San Siro told Sky Sport Italia.

“It's useful to start over and build from scratch,” he explained. “This year our aim is to earn our place in Europe again.”

The Beneamata have won three and drawn one of their first four League games so far, but the ‘keeper is remaining cautious amidst talk of a Scudetto challenge.

“I don't know about the title. It's a long season. We have to concentrate on the now, on tomorrow, the day after tomorrow…

“I can't say how far we have come. I only know that we're improving. We're just a few games into the season, but the main thing is that we're thinking as a team.

“It's still the beginning so it means nothing at the moment. I think we'll learn a lot from this sequence of three games [against Fiorentina, Cagliari and Roma].”

Inter conceded 57 goals last term in the top-flight, but they have allowed just one against them in 360 minutes so far.

“If I have fewer shots to deal with it's down to all the players and the Coach. We're more convinced now too. I think you get that conviction first and foremost from the Coach.”
