Russia boss Fabio Capello is backing Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid to win the Champions League in 2013-14.
Real, who appointed Ancelotti in the summer, are currently third in the table following the 1-0 home loss to rivals Atletico at the weekend.
“Ancelotti needs time,” Capello, who bossed the Spanish giants during two separate stints, told El Primer Toque. “The players need to understand his football.
“However, I am certain that Real Madrid are the favourites for the Champions League.”
Real are in a group containing Italian champions Juventus, Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.
Capello was also asked for an opinion on the Iker Casillas situation in the Spanish capital.
“I think it is harmful to play Diego Lopez in the League and Casillas in the Champions League,” the former England manager continued.
“You can’t change the goalkeeper like you would swap a midfielder. The goalkeeper is a really delicate role.
“Diego Lopez and Casillas are two great ‘keepers, but a decision needs to be made.”
Capello was also questioned on the sale of Mesut Ozil to Arsenal and the capture of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
“Getting rid of Ozil was an error, while Bale is a great player. Saying that, the latter needs to be in great shape and understand the football of Ancelotti to do well.”
