Riccardo Montolivo concedes Milan were “a little too deep” against Ajax and they need Mario Balotelli.

“Ajax started very strong and they make possession their greatest weapon,” he told Mediaset after a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam.

“Perhaps we were a little too deep in the first half, but the game changed after the break and we could’ve taken the lead.”

Balotelli was available, as his three-match ban only applies to Serie A, and converted a last-gasp penalty.

“Balotelli is our added value and simply too important for this team. He made mistakes, but these things happen and you can’t make someone carry the cross forever.”

Montolivo had to move into a more advanced trequartista role after Valter Birsa picked up an injury in the warm-up.

“It’s a shame for him and I hope he’ll be back soon.”
