Benitez: Scudetto not won on Friday

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez has played down the significance of Friday’s Serie A game at League leaders Roma.

“There are a lot of matches in Serie A and it is a race based on resistance,” the Spaniard told Il Mattino in an interview.

“The championship is won at the end of the season, not on Friday night…”

The Giallorossi have been a revelation under new boss Rudi Garcia seeing as they have won seven from seven. The Azzurrri and Juventus, however, are only two points adrift in second.

“If we beat Roma then that doesn’t mean I am better than Garcia and if they win it doesn’t mean the opposite.

“The Frenchman is a high level Coach, we spent a week together at Valencia, but I’m against comparing Coaches.”

Benitez arrived in Naples over the summer after Walter Mazzarri opted to leave at the end of his contract to join Inter.

“We have to remain close to perfection in an effort to win something,” Benitez continued. “That is our message – we want to be strong as a team and a club.

“Rather than winning once, I’d prefer to remain at the top for five years.”
