Bonaventura puts Atalanta first

Giacomo Bonaventura knows he has to keep delivering for Atalanta should he want his career to step up in level.

The versatile midfielder was a revelation in Serie A last season and his efforts were rewarded with a first international cap in May.

“It is stimulating to know that big clubs are following me,” the 24-year-old told Sport Italia. “That’s because you always want to reach the level of the great players who are part of the great teams.

“However, I know that everything depends on what I do for Atalanta. If I one day want to go and join a giant then I have to prove that I am good enough.

“The national side? I’m not really thinking about Italy,” he added. “That can become a distraction. I just want to concentrate on Atalanta.”

Bonaventura has only made one appearance for the Azzurri to date – and that came in a 4-0 win over San Marino.
